Born and raised in South Korea, Sung Ae Ri, is an established artist with more than twenty years of experience. She is currently based in Seong Nam, South Korea, but is frequently travelling around for exhibitions. She has held a vast amount of not only group and project-based exhibitions but also private exhibitions; with a total of 214 group and project-based exhibitions and 45 private ones.Ae Ri’s paintings embrace the unique beauty of Asian motifs and expresses them with a touch of western techniques. In the Asian culture, Koi and Peony are a well-known symbol for wealth, prosperity and abundance. In her works, these motifs are delicately expressed with her distinctive combination of acrylics and watercolor. Such symbolism is used in each frame to capture each entity’s aspiration to another world. Koi and Peony are connected by their common dependence on water for their own survival, yet they are fated to exist in two different worlds —the former being underwater and the latter underwater.As the title of her previous solo exhibition “Elegant Imagination” suggest, her paintings express her wish towards a new, better world, towards the impossible.
