Shaoxing, China’s “City of Water”, has a rich history that dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period, around 2,500 years ago. The city was the capital of the state of Yue, and was home to many scholars, literati,
and social activists. The city was first named Shaoxing in 1131 A.D. during the Southern Song dynasty. The name comes from the Shaoxing reign period of Emperor Gaozong of Song, and is a poetic term meaning “inheriting the imperial task and resurging to prosperity”
