“We Don’t Own Things; Things Own Us” is inspired by Henry Thoreau’s quote on “we don’t own things, things own us. Every new object – whether it’s a home, a car, television, or a fancy phone like that one- is something more we must carry on our backs.” The emergence of humans, animals and objects are strategically composed to symbolize the importance of simplicity, authenticity, and downright disobedience of our thoughts. Like a puzzle, the painting is filled with subtle hints of symbolism about contemporary times, which reflects on how humans tend to believe that their self-worth is found in the things they own.
